Glenn Whelan, a professional football player, was born on January 13, 1984 in Dublin, which is the largest city and the capital of Republic of Ireland.
Glenn Whelan represents Republic of Ireland at international level and played has played at different levels. He represented the Republic of Ireland Under-20 team at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship and was also included in the country’s Under-21 team. Glenn Whelan had made fourteen international appearances for this team and was honored with the team’s captaincy in many of these games. He earned a spot in the Republic of Ireland B national football team and made his debut for this team against Scotland on November 20, 2007. In 2008, Glenn Whelan was included in the national senior team and won his first international cap for this side in May 2008 against Serbia. On September 6, 2008 he netted his first international goal in a match against Georgia in Mainz, Germany.
Glenn Whelan started his professional career in 2001 by playing for Manchester City and made one appearance in the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) Cup against Total Network Solutions in August 2003. The following month, he was sent to the Bury football club on loan for a period of a month, and he played seven games during his stint with the club. On December 24, 2003, Glenn Whelan was again sent on loan to Bury, for which the midfielder played another six games.
In the summer of 2004, Glenn Whelan made a move to Sheffield Wednesday and played a vital role in helping the club secure a play-off place. He was voted “Man of the Match” in the League One play-off final after he scored the game-winning third goal against Hartlepool at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. After this club earned a promotion to the Championship, he underwent a trial for captaincy after the former captain Lee Bullen was injured. In July 2006, he was placed on the transfer list by the manager, Paul Sturrock because of stiff competition for the midfield position from other new arrivals. But, Glenn Whelan was included back in the team by Brian Laws, the successor to Paul Sturrock, and he showed his gratitude to the new manager by scoring seven goals against Leicester, Southampton and Luton. These impressive performances earned him many “Player of the Year” awards for the club’s 2006-2007 season. The same season, he won the Owls' Player of the Season award for the 2006/2007 campaign for his consistent form during the club’s campaign. Glenn Whelan played for the club till 2008, appearing in 142 games and scored a total of twelve goals.
On January 30, 2008, Glenn Whelan signed a three-and-a-half-year contract to play as a midfielder with Stoke City for a transfer fee of £500,000 and was given the squad number 6.
