Glen Johnson is an international footballer who was born on August 23, 1984 in Greenwich, England. He started playing for the England Under-21 (U-21) team in 2003 and on November 18 he made his senior debut for the country by coming on as a substitute in a match against Denmark. In 2006, Glen Johnson ended his U-21 career after making 14 appearances for the squad, and as of 2008, he has earned 9 international caps as a senior player.
Glen Johnson started his career from the Leicester City’s junior team and when he was just 12, he moved to become a West Ham United’s junior team member. On August 1, 2001, he signed a three-year professional contract with West Ham United, and in the 2001-02 season, he was playing regularly for the club’s reserve team. On October 17, 2002, he was loaned out on a four-week deal to Milwall, and on the third day after joining, he made his Championship debut for the club against Norwich City. At the end of the deal, Glen Johnson returned to West Ham United and made his Premiership debut in a match against Charlton Athletic played on January 22, 2003. During his tenure at West Ham, he appeared in 15 league matches and in a single Football Association (FA) Cup game. On July 15, 2003, Chelsea bought Glen Johnson for a transfer fee of £6 million, and he made his debut on August 13 in a match against Zilina at the 2003-04 Champions League. His league debut came on August 17 in a winning match against Liverpool, and his first league goal was in the team’s 5-0 win over Newcastle United in November 2003. He ended the 2003-04 season for Chelsea with 32 appearances and with four goals to his credit.
In the 2005-06 season, Glen Johnson played in the Premier League match, in which his team marked a 4-0 win over West Bromwich Albion, and in June 2006, he was loaned out to Portsmouth for a season long deal. During the 2006-07 season for Portsmouth, he was a part of the defence that did not concede even a single goal in the first five games of the season. On August 31, 2007, he signed a four-year contract with Portsmouth and since then, Glen Johnson has become the club’s regular right-back. On October 20, 2007, he scored a goal against Wigan Athletic after dribbling the ball from the halfway line and was also a part of the 2008 FA Cup winning Portsmouth team.
