Gerald Juhnke - Professional Summary: Gerald A. Juhnke, Ed.D., LPC, NCC, ACS, LCAS, MAC is a Professor at The University of Texas at San Antonio and former Founding Director of UTSA's Counselor Education and Supervision Doctoral Program. Dr. Juhnke is a: (a) former President of The International Association of Addictions & Offender Counselors, (b) former President of The Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education, (c) former Editor of The Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling, and (d) former Co-Chair of The American Counseling Association's Council of Journal Editors. He has authored or edited eight books specific to violence, suicide, and/or addictions. Dr. Juhnke has authored over 50 refereed journal articles and was identified as the most prolific Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling researcher-author from 1999 to 2004 and the second most prolific JAOC researcher-author from 1993 to 1998. He has been the recipient of numerous counseling related awards including the 2009 American Counseling Association Fellow Award, the 2008 International Association for Addictions and Offender Counseling (IAAOC) Addictions/Offender Educator Excellence Award, the IAAOC Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling Research Award, and the American Counseling Association's Ralph F. Berdie Research Award.

 

 

Gerald Juhnke - Professional Experience:

2012 to Present: Professor, Department of Counselor Education and Supervision, The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Primary responsibilities: teaching master's and doctoral courses including chairing doctoral dissertations and teaching clinical practicum and internship courses.

 

2004 to 2011: Professor and Founding Doctoral Program Director, Department of Counselor Education and Supervision, The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Primary responsibilities: (a) directing all aspects of a 35 FTE doctoral program including but not limited to annually constructing a $250,000 budget for research assistantships, tuition remission, and fees, coordinating with The UTSA Graduate School and the College of Education to insure student and program policy compliance, partnering with program faculty to insure timely doctoral student progression and academic success, addressing in- and out- of state doctoral tuition issues, overseeing and chairing doctoral admissions, resolving student and faculty concerns or conflicts, and strategic success planning, (b) teaching master’s and doctoral courses in substance abuse, child and family, group, and life-threatening behaviors counseling, practicum, and university teaching for Ph.D. students, (c) serving various Department and College committees, and (d) chairing, serving, and providing guidance to doctoral dissertation committees. Past major responsibilities as the founding doctoral program director: (a) jointly working with program faculty to establish a doctoral program mission statement and unified strategic vision, (b) coordinating with program faculty to develop a doctoral program handbook, various policies, and the evident presence of a doctoral-research “culture”, (c) contributing to the CACREP self-study and site team leadership response including co-authoring reports specific to the doctoral program, and (d) cultivating a positive presence to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the UTSA Graduate School, and the College.
