George McCartney is a professional football player, who was born on April 29, 1981 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.


George McCartney represents Northern Ireland at the international level. In 2000, he got a call for the U-21 side and has won a total of five international caps for this side. This defender won his first international cap for the senior side in its World Cup qualifying win against Iceland in which he scored once. Since then, George McCartney has made a total of 25 appearances for his national side.


He began his professional football career as a trainee with the Sunderland football club in 1998. A couple of years later, he made his debut for the club’s senior side in a match against Luton at the Worthington Cup. During the 2003-04 season, George McCartney was named the captain of the side after Jason McAteer suffered a long-term injury and in the following season, he was voted as the Player of the Season by Sunderland fans during the successful Championship winning campaign. In the same season, he also earned the title "Mr. Consistent" from the manager, Mick McCarthy, for his impressive performance in that season. During his tenure at the club, he has made a total of 134 appearances.


On August 8, 2006 George McCartney joined the West Ham United football club on a four-year deal and made his debut on October 24, 2006 in a match against Chesterfield at the League Cup. During his first season at this club, he has made 25 appearances, and a few weeks before the start of the 2007-08 season, he scored his first goal for the club in its friendly game against Roma one. On November 4, 2007, he scored his first premiership goal for this club in its 1-1 home draw against Bolton Wanderers. At the end of the 2007-08 season, George McCartney received the runner up Hammer of the Year Award. He has been a part of this club for two seasons and has appeared in sixty one games.


In 2008, George McCartney moved back to his former football club, Sunderland.
