George Boateng, born on September 5, 1975 in Nkawkaw, Ghana, is a Dutch footballer who plays as a midfielder. He was selected for the Holland national team in 2001 and made his debut for the team against Denmark in November of the same year.
George Boateng kick-started his football career at the Excelsior Rotterdam club in 1994. He moved on to Feyenoord Rotterdam the next year, and during his three year association with the club, he appeared in 70 matches. George Boateng switched to Coventry City in 1998 for a fee of £220,000. His solid defensive midfielding was instrumental in the club’s fifteenth place finish in the Premier League.
George Boateng signed for Aston Villa in the next season, and he made 131 appearances for the club. He represented the club in the 2000 Football Association (FA) Cup final against Chelsea, and his team won the runner-up title. He joined Middlesbrough in 2002 for a sum of £5,000,000 and made his full debut as a defensive midfielder for the club against Southampton on the first day of the 2002–03 season. In the consecutive season, George Boateng was a member of the Middlesbrough team that clinched the League Cup for the first time. He was voted as the most missed player by his fans at the official Boro website due to his absence caused by an injury during the 2004–05 season. George Boateng extended his contract with Middlesbrough in June 2006 for three years and was made the team’s captain on July 21, 2006. In the 2006 Union of European Football Association (UEFA) Cup finals, he was a part of the team that won the runner-up title. In the 2007 FA Cup, he scored in the match against Manchester United, a fete in the tournament since 1999. During his tenure with the club, he played in 182 league matches and contributed seven goals.
