Chief of emergency medicine and Interim Chairman Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner directs a skilled team of doctors and nurses at the Howard University Hospital in Washington DC. Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner utilizes his skill in strategic planning and leadership to improve patient care, safety, and service. In addition to his duties at Howard University Hospital, he is the Interim Medical Director/Assistant Fire Chief for the District of Columbia. Assessing the medical care and protocols of the fire and emergency departments, he evaluated over 250 advanced life support providers in the area. Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner gave each provider a written test, practicum, and live interview. As one of 6 executives overseeing the training of EMS professionals, Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner ensures that quality care is distributed throughout his jurisdiction. Prior to his current positions, Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Hampton University in Virginia in 1989. He earned his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan in 1994. Afterward, Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner acquired his Master’s in Public Health in 1995 from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts. Upon leaving his Master’s program, Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner served as an attending physician for a number of institutions in Maryland including Union Memorial Hospital, Civista Health, Southern Maryland Hospital Center, and Saint Agnes Hospital. In his spare time, Dr. Geoffrey Mountvarner participates in marathons and triathlons. He reads books by Malcolm Gladwell, Daniel Goldman, and other contemporary writers.
