A leader among American Indian nonprofits, Gathering of Nations, Ltd., provides cultural, educational, and financial opportunities for Native Americans throughout the United States. Founded nearly 30 years ago, Gathering of Nations sponsors a range of events throughout the year, including the continent’s largest powwow, most recently conducted in April 2011.
Held annually, the Gathering of Nations Powwow involves hundreds of indigenous tribes, tribal bands, and groups hailing from the United States, Canada, and throughout the world. The event is hosted in Albuquerque at The Pit, The University of New Mexico’s arena, and features Native American arts and entertainment, including dancing, drumming, and vocal performances. In recognition of its excellence, the recording of the 2010 Gathering of Nations Powwow won the 2010 GRAMMY award for Best Native American Music Album.
The Gathering of Nations Powwow includes a number of ancillary events, such as the annual Miss Indian World Pageant, the Indian Trader’s Market, and Stage 49, a free performance space showcasing dozens of American Indian vocalists, bands, and musicians. In addition, the Gathering of Nations Powwow features a variety of food vendors, offering guests an impressive array of tribal cuisines to sample. Proceeds from the event support the Gathering of Nations Academic Scholarship Foundation for Native American Students, established to offset educational costs for Indian students at The University of New Mexico.
