The essential fact of any roulette system is, that a geometric series which has an initial value of 0.97 or 0.95 will always tend to zero over time. This means, that in the long run, players who play roulette will lose. Supposedly, at least!

This mathematical property, called the house edge is something that many engineers have tried to beat, starting with the efforts of one Joseph Jagger, way back in 1873 in Monte Carlo. The basic mechanism behind any such system to ‘beat’ the roulette system is the same- the mechanical properties of the wheel is considered so as to determine numbers the ball is more likely to fall into. If the numbers are good enough, the game will be forced to return a gain of 100%, thus overcoming the house edge.

Although such systems to play roulette have been around for a while, it wasn’t until the emergence of computers into the mix that things began to heat up.

For instance, sometime in the early 1990’s, Gonzala Garcia Pelayo conjectured that roulette wheels weren’t perfectly random like it was made out to be. He believed that with the aid of a computer, it was possible for him to predict the numbers that would occur in a game. This is something he actually went on to do, winning a whopping 1 million Euros. To add insult to injury for the casino, no legal action could be taken against him because well, he never did tamper with casino equipment, or violate the roulette system. That’s one hell of a way to play roulette, all right!

Of course, casinos weren’t about to take exploits like these lying down- to retaliate, casino owners today regularly monitor the performance of their wheels, realigning and rebalancing frequently to keep the results of the spin as random and uniform as possible.

In addition, many newer models of wheels have also been designed, specifically to make the results much more random.
