Long Island attorney Gary Tabat has served the community as an experienced matrimonial lawyer since 1972. A graduate of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Mr. Tabat completed a Bachelor of Arts while majoring in history and American studies. Next attending Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh, Gary Tabat was handpicked to participate in the federal Neighborhood Legal Services Program. Working in the criminal division as an intern, Gary Tabat argued writs, prepared bail applications, and participated in hearings. Admitted to The State Bar of New York in 1972, Gary Tabat also serves in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. A former member of the United States Army, he was honorably discharged after serving in the Army Reserve.
Gary Tabat currently functions as the founding partner of Tabat, Cohen, Blum & Yovino, LLP, operating in the five boroughs of New York City as well as Long Island. Beginning his law practice as a general practitioner, Gary Tabat focused on real estate and criminal law. After the passage of the Equitable Distribution law in 1980, his established practice turned its focus to the area of matrimonial and family law, including litigation and appeals. Now responsible for the day-to-day activities of an average of 10 top attorneys, Mr. Tabat guides his legal team in the representation of clients in child custody, divorce, separation, and domestic partnership matters.
Gary Tabat maintains membership in the Nassau and Suffolk County Bar Associations and their committees on family and matrimonial law, also serving on the Board of Directors of the Suffolk County Matrimonial Bar Association. In recognition of his extensive expertise in the area of family law, he is often called on to lecture before groups such as the Suffolk County Bar Association’s Suffolk Academy of Law, the Nassau County Bar Association’s Family Court Law & Procedure Committee, and The State Bar of New York. For five years, he was a manager and lecturer for the Suffolk County Judges School, where he was responsible for the continuing education of judges and legal secretaries on valuation issues and matrimonial law. He is also the author of the legal research text LexisNexis AnswerGuide New York Matrimonial Actions.
