About Gary Lamotta
Gary Lamotta - Professional Summary:
A retired New York City Principal with over 35 years of teaching and administrative experience, Gary LaMotta began his career at St. John's University in Jamaica, New York, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. He continued his education at New York University, earning his Master of Arts in History in 1973. From there, he taught intermediate Social Studies and Language Arts at Intermediate School 155. In 1977, Gary LaMotta attended The College of New Rochelle to receive accreditation that allowed him to begin working in the rewarding field of special education full time.
In 1984, Gary LaMotta received his Professional Diploma in Education Administration and Supervision from Fordham University. This degree paved the way for his 21-year tenure as a Supervisor and, later, Principal. In 1985, he received an appointment as the Special Education Supervisor for District 3 in Manhattan, where he oversaw special education matters for several schools. He held this position until 1991, when he became the Principal of Public School 280 in the Bronx. In the following years, Gary LaMotta facilitated the school’s expansion from grades K-5 to K-8 in addition to providing extra classrooms to prevent overcrowding. In 1998, Mr. LaMotta received recognition as Principal of the Year for District 10 in New York.
In 1997 and 2001, Gary LaMotta attended The Principals’ Center at Harvard University, a gathering of principals from across the nation to address contemporary issues in education. He also attended the National Principals Leadership Institute at Fordham University in 1998 and served as a Principals’ Mentor in the Bronx in 2002, 2003, and 2004. A resident of the Bronx, Mr. LaMotta enjoys volunteering, reading, gardening, exercising, and is an avid sports fan.

When he started as principal, the school started as a k-6 school, then it was k-5, but he started an initiative to expand it into a middle school as well and added the 6 7 and 8th grade over the course of a few years leading up to 07 and then he retired. -This was an initiative that expanded across to other NY school, converting schools from PS to PS/MS.

Principal/School Highlights:
1992-1995 - PS 280 one of the 5 most overcrowded schools in NYC
1995 - Provided 4 portable classrooms to releive some of the overcrowding
2000 - Completion of new school bldg. [attached to old sch bldg] as we grew to over 500 students. Shared old bldg w/ another school
2004 - Became an Autonomous School [one of the first in NYC]
2004-2007 - evolved from a K-5 to a K-8 school and grew to over 850 students
2002,2003, & 2004-2005 - Principal/School rec'd CSA High Achievement Monetary Award for demonstrated school excellence
