About Gary Chesley
School administrator Gary Chesley manages Bethel Public Schools in Bethel, Connecticut. He accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools in 1998 and has helped the district to dramatically improve its educational standards while maintaining low budget increases. Dr. Chesley has developed valuable academic opportunities for students, including the facilitation of an exclusive partnership with Western Connecticut State University in order to create an impressive fine arts program with over 500 band students, 300 string students, and 3 musical productions.
Gary Chesley is responsible for managing the district's $37 million budget. Furthermore, with long-term strategies in mind, he ensures that Bethel Public Schools exemplify sustainable management and stellar academics. As part of his duties, Dr. Chesley belongs to the American Association of School Superintendents and the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents.
Gary Chesley has over 35 years of experience in school management. Prior to managing the Bethel school district, Dr. Chesley served Cheshire Public Schools as Principal and later as Assistant Superintendent. During his tenure as Assistant Superintendent, he oversaw major construction projects, as well as the hiring and evaluation of teachers. He extensively developed curricular strategies that resulted in an increase in state achievement test scores and fine arts enrollment, as well as the implementation of K-12 academic benchmarks. Gary Chesley also worked to strengthen the administrative core of the schools through in-house staff development programs such as the Learning Initiatives Team.
Gary Chesley has functioned as principal at various other schools across the United States. From 1973 to 1980, he was Assistant Principal at Parkway Central High in Chesterfield, Missouri. In 1980, he took over as Principal and raised the school's teaching standards, which resulted in 16 National Merit Scholars every year. He also strongly encouraged the implementation of a desegregation program and welcomed 400 minority students to Parkway Central High. He went on to become Principal of Eaglecrest Middle/High School from 1984 to 1989.
In his free time, Gary Chesley enjoys playing golf, gardening, and traveling.
