About Gael Clichy


Gael Clichy is a French footballer, born on July 26, 1985 in Toulouse and lives in London. As of 2008, he plays for the Arsenal club and is usually found in the left back position.
In 2004, Gael Clichy earned a berth in the France U-21 National team to represent his country. Later in January 2008, he got a call to represent his country, France, in a game against Spain. Soon after that game, he was also selected for France B National team for a friendly fixture against Congo DR. He is also a part of the French squad for the 2008 Euros and is yet to earn his first international cap.


Gael Clichy started his international football career with the Cannes football club, where he made fifteen appearances for the club from 2001 to 2003. Later, he moved to Arsenal in 2003 and retains his left-back position. In the 2003-04 season, Gael Clichy made 12 appearances for the club and was a part of the premiership’s victorious team, which earned him a winner’s medal. With this medal, Gael Clichy set the record as the youngest winner to hold a Premiership Champions medal. Again in the same season, he was prominent a player of the triumphant Arsenal team in the FA Premier League.


In 2005, Gael Clichy was also part of the Arsenal’s FA cup winning team. Arsenal suffered a major blow, when he met with an injury that forced him to rest for a year. After the injury, he came back to the team in 2006, and took part in the Champions League semi-final against Villarreal. After the exit of Ashley Cole, an English footballer of Barbadian descent, to Chelsea, Gael Clichy was chosen as the first choice left back for the Arsenal club. He made a total of 62 appearances in three consecutive seasons including 39 in the premiership league.
The 2007-08 season proves to be a successful season for the French Footballer, Gael Clichy, when he became first ever Arsenal player to have played every single match in the Premier league during that season. During his stint at the club, he was a part winning team of the Emirates Cup in 2007 and Amsterdam Tournament in 2005 and 2007. Among Arsenal fans, he is known by his nickname "Mr. Consistent" for his ability to deliver quality performance in every match. He is also is known as "Gaelforce” as he is one of the fastest players in the premiership.


As of 2008, Gael Clichy has made a total of 100 appearances for the Arsenal club.
