Frederick Boland - Professional Summary:
For more than 30 years, computer scientist Frederick Boland has immersed himself in a wide range of projects related to software development, testing, and accessibility, serving the needs of various government agencies and departments. As a key member of the Software and Systems Division Staff at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) since 1984, Frederick Boland invests his work with a rich history of professional and academic achievement.
Over the course of his career with NIST, Frederick Boland has enjoyed a steady increase of departmental responsibility and has served as Chief Liaison between his agency and the World Wide Web Consortium, operated as a Disability Coordinator for the institute’s Civil Rights and Diversity Office, and led efforts to automate information databases for all branches of the U.S. military, among other accomplishments. Owing to his consistent performance with NIST, Frederick Boland has earned numerous honors, both within the institute and from outside organizations, including an Assistive Technology Award, the NIST Diversity Award, the W3C Contribution Award, a nomination for an NIST Bronze Medal, and a Federal 100 Award from Federal Computer Week. A professor as well, Frederick Boland served on the adjunct faculty at the University of Maryland University College, where from 1987 through 2010, he taught varying levels of undergraduate courses in computer science in the classroom and online.
Prior to joining the staff at NIST, Frederick Boland spent three years as a Computer Specialist for the Washington, D.C.-based Defense Mapping Agency (now the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency), during which time he worked on software automation projects, performed testing, and developed computer training courses. Frederick Boland came to the Defense Mapping Agency after a successful period as a Meteorologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Princeton, New Jersey. Frederick Boland earned both his Master of Science in Computer Science and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Master of Science in Meteorology from The Pennsylvania State University. Frederick Boland resides in the greater D.C. metro area.Frederick Boland also assists others at NIST in his role as Disability Coordinator. Frederick Boland will be speaking on software issues at the Software SIG meeting in November 2011.Frederick Boland is working on a software reference database. Frederick Boland is working on several software assurance publications. Frederick Boland is on the NIST Diversity Committee.
