Frank Cylon Jawa



Thanks for taking a look at my profile. I'm Frank and I've been into science fiction and science fantasy since the good old days of the 70s, when everything from Star Trek to Star Wars, from Cylon to Jawa, was all over TV and movie screens.

 

Today's science fiction takes a lot from its predecessors, but one new feature is technology. Special effects today would pretty much blow everything from 30 years ago out of the water. Remember, Star Wars was cutting edge in terms of technology when it came out in 77 and they used motion scale photography, scale models, and slow camera pans. Today, computer generated graphics are blowing audiences away -- if you have any doubt, just look at Avatar.

 

Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars offer two different approaches to special effects today in the appearances of the Cylon & Jawa. Jawas were never really touched by George Lucas when he re-mastered the original trilogy and made the prequel films. However, when Battlestar Galactica was remade into a new TV series, this was not so. Contrast the style changes between Cylon & Jawa. Cylons went from cybernetic life forms, clearly robotic but with human characteristics, to something different. The new Battlestar Galactica series features a type of Cylon that is made to appear human, just like the Terminators. Of course, robots that look like humans are definitely not a new idea in the world of sci-fi.

 

Either way, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
