Early Life of Evgeny Shvidler

Eugene Shvidler, born in Moscow in 1964, is a Russian billionaire featuring in the Forbes list of richest persons. In Russia, Evgeny Shvidler got trained as an oil engineer at the Gubkin Institute of Petrochemicals and Natural Gas. He later attended the Fordham University and received an MBA degree. He began his career at the Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, New York, which is one of the Big Four auditors in the world along with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, and KPMG.

Evgeny Shvidler Strikes Gold in the Form of Oil

Evgeny Shvidler owes much of his fortune to this privatization boom of oil companies in the 1990s. Evgeny Shvidler eventually became a US citizen but later returned to Russia. Roman Abramovich, another oil billionaire, is Shvidler’s business partner as well as close friend. When Shvidler returned to Russia, he joined hands with Roman Abramovich and co-founded the oil trading company, Runicom SA. However, it did not do well and is currently in a state of bankruptcy. It owed a debt of $ 17.5 million to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which primarily invests in Russia.

In 1995, Shvidler and Abramovich partnered Boris Berezovsky in acquiring Sibneft. Sibneft, a huge venture of oil production and refining in Russia was established in 1995. Shvidler was president of Sibneft from 1998 till 2005. It was later renamed Gazprom Neft when the same acquired 73% of Sibneft’s shares.

Shvidler also holds the Chairman post of an asset and investment management company, Millhouse, LLC, owned by Roman Abramovich and founded in 2001.

Shvidler has always had a warm and friendly association with Abramovich. It spans from their days in the 1990s in Russia till the present time. Although Abramovich is undoubtedly the wealthier of the two, it has not deterred their friendship. Dubbed by the media as Abramovich’s sidekick, Shvidler has always been in the limelight for the luxurious gifts he receives from Abramovich. In 2006, Roman Abramovich gifted him a private yacht named Le Grand Bleu which is one of the largest in the world. A Ferrari and a flock of modern Highland sheep are other gifts to Shvidler from his wealthy billionaire friend.

Shvidler’s Vineyard at Château Thenac

After a wine-tasting session in France in 2000, Shvidler set his heart on buying a vineyard. He bought the Château Thenac in Southern France and it produces some of the finest wines, which are supplied to swanky restaurants in Paris and London. This scenic site located between the Bordeaux and Bergerac region in France consists of a beautiful Château flanked by hectares of vineyards and plum orchards. He has also purchased a mansion in London's Belgravia district for $37 million. Despite his plush lifestyle, Evgeny Shvidler prefers to keep a low profile.
