About Erinn Smart


Erinn Smart, a fencer from the United States of America, was born on January 2, 1980 in Brooklyn, New York and currently resides in Ocean Avenue. Her father, Thomas, was an employee at the Sports Illustrated. Her brother Keeth is also a nationally ranked competitive fencer. In an interview after her parents, Erinn Smart claimed that her parents were instrumental in developing her life as well as motivating her to excel in fencing.

In 1996, Erinn Smart graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School, with a major in chemistry. She earned a degree in economics from Barnard College at the Columbia University in Manhattan.

Erinn Smart worked for Celine, a French fashion company, before leaving to train full-time for Athens and currently she is working for Lord Abbott, a financial firm. Before taking up fencing, Erinn Smart was interested ballet, ice skating, tennis and track. When she was 11, her father came to know about a program that was aimed at encouraging minority participation in fencing, and he motivated her to take up the sport. Both Erinn Smart and her brother Keeth went to Peter Westbrook Foundation to learn the sport under the guidance of Peter Westbrook, who is a former Olympic saber bronze medalist. Her role model in life was her mother as she considers her to be an epitome of strong will and smartness. Erinn Smart was the second woman fencer in the history to win three gold medals in the Junior Olympics 1996. Couple of years later, she became the U.S. national champion in fencing and got selected as an alternate in the United States team for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, but did not participate in the competition. In the following year, she won a bronze medal with the Senior Worlds Women's foil team. In 2002, she won the U.S. national champion title for her excellent fencing skills.

Erinn Smart earned a spot in the United States team and entered the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, after outperforming the Zimmerman sisters, Iris and Felicia and finished 17th in the individual foil competition at the 2004 Athens Olympics. In the same year, she won the U.S. Fencing National Championships for the third time after defeating three-time former Olympian Ann Marsh. A few years later in 2007, she won a silver medal at the Pan American Games held at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the individual event and also won a gold medal in the team event.

Erinn Smart got selected for the 2008 Beijing Olympics foil team to represent her country. She won a silver medal in the Women’s foil team event.

Erinn Smart wears something red at every tournament for luck. She wears a bracelet, which she got at a competition in China and at least one red piece of clothing.

Erinn Smart is also known for her fluency in Spanish. Her favorite pass time hobby is listening to music on her iPod and some of her favorite artists are Amy Whinehouse, Jay Z, Corinne Barley Rae, and Kanye West. Gladiator is her favorite movie and her favorite television show is Sex and the City. Though she took up fencing, she loves tennis as well and her favorite tennis player is James Blake.
