About Engel Burns

Engel Burns - Professional Summary:

In a September 2011 article about Engel Burns entitled “King of the Hill,” Ebony Magazine recaps the life experiences and influences that led to his current career as a Washington, D.C., pharmaceutical lobbyist. In the interview portion of the article, Engel Burns also candidly shares his motivations and perspective as Federal Account Director of Government Affairs at Sunovion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In particular, he expresses empathy for millions of uninsured Americans, noting his work supporting the passage of the health care reform bill. Mr. Burns cites his efforts to eliminate treatment access barriers for African Americans and Hispanics, who suffer disproportionately from asthma, as an example of the positive role lobbyists can play.

Early on, Engel Burns felt a personal passion for the life sciences and decided to major in biology, initially at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and subsequently at the University of Maryland, where he earned his degree. Mr. Burns’ other passion is politics, although he was not exposed to it until after college, when he campaigned for his father, Dr. Emmett C. Burns Jr., a five-term Maryland state legislator. Subsequent work as a clinical lab technician and entrepreneurial business owner expanded the medical knowledge and relationship-building skills that Mr. Burns employs to influence national policies affecting the pharmaceutical industry. At Sonovian, he utilizes his passion, education, and experience to advance the political and policy agenda of the company, whose business focuses on treatments for respiratory and central nervous system disorders. Engel D. Burns is a member of the Council of Corporate Advisors for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc.

The leader of the youth ministry at Rising Sun Baptist Church, Engel Burns has provided guidance and designed programs for church youth for over a decade. His other community-focused work includes securing funding for and directing an after-school care program in his local district. Additionally, Mr. Burns has engaged in mentoring gifted minority students at his alma mater, the University of Maryland in Baltimore County.
