About Emily Margaretten
Emily Margaretten - Professional Summary:
Urban anthropologist Emily Margaretten, Ph.D. graduated magna cum laude in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology from Colgate University. Later, Emily Margaretten earned both a Master of Philosophy and a Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology from Yale University.
Spending several years observing urban youth communities in Durban, South Africa, Emily Margaretten gained special insight into the economic, social, and familial issues that drove these young people from their homes and onto the streets. Emily Margaretten also studied the complex bonds and resourceful shelter-seeking methods that brought these individuals together. Subsequently, Emily Margaretten published numerous scholarly papers and spoke at professional conferences about the lives, struggles, and relationships of South African youth.
Emily Margaretten conducted further research into the rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal, where many street youth in Durban come from. Emily Margaretten learned that on the occasions when these young people returned home, a complex set of cultural mores and beliefs inhibited processes of reconciliation. Coming home was made particularly difficult by certain rites of reconciliation which involve not just living family members but also the deceased.
