About Elliot Gerson

 

 Over the course of his career, Elliot Gerson has made a broad impact in such fields as law, healthcare management, public policy, and education, leading a number of notable initiatives in the United States and beyond. A Rhodes Scholar, Mr. Gerson graduated summa cum laude from Harvard with a degree in History and Science, won first class honors in philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford, and earned a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1979. After Yale, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as a staff assistant under the Secretary of Defense and served in clerkships in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States. He went on to practice law for several years, working as an associate at Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard and McPherson and as the Deputy Attorney General of Connecticut. From there, Mr. Gerson spent a decade in various senior roles with the Travelers Corporation, where he became Executive Vice President (and president of the Travelers Insurance Company (life and health), and then as Executive Vice President of the spinoff company MetraHealth. Following the 1995 MetraHealth-UnitedHealthcare merger and a brief term with the latter company, Mr. Gerson became President of FHC Health Systems, one of the country's largest behavioral health companies,

Elliot Gerson accepted his current post of American Secretary of the Rhodes Trust in 1998 and continues to oversee administration of the Rhodes Scholarship in the U.S. Concurrently, Mr. Gerson also serves as Executive Vice President of Policy and Public Programs and International Partners for the Aspen Institute, one of the world’s foremost nonpartisan public policy think tanks and leadership forums. Part of the Aspen Institute since 2004, Elliot Gerson furthers the organization’s growth through such events as the Aspen Ideas Festival and partnerships with key leaders in business, government, and academia.
