About Ellen Plummer
With over 25 years of academic and professional experience in art exhibition and history, Ellen “Nan” Plummer's work has benefited a number of museums throughout the country. Most recently as the Executive Director of the Arkansas Arts Center, Ellen “Nan” Plummer improved public access to, and quality of, museum exhibitions while helping the nonprofit's financial health. Ellen “Nan” Plummer holds multiple degrees in art history, including her Bachelor of Arts, magma cum laude, from Mount Holyoke College, and a Doctorate from the University of Michigan.
Her work has appeared in exhibitions around the country and in publications like the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. As a faculty member, Ellen “Nan” Plummer has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses about museum practice and education and nonprofit management, including the University of Michigan’s Department of the History of Art, the Art Department of the University of Toledo, and currently as an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Institute of Government. In her first position at Artrain, Inc., the nation’s only traveling art museum, Ellen “Nan” Plummer developed exhibitions and education programs, and eventually worked her way to the position of Executive Director. The University of Michigan Museum of Art then selected her as its Assistant Director for Programs where she revitalized interdisciplinary collaboration with community organizations, arts entities, and the Department of the History of Art.
As Programs Administrator for the Toledo Museum of Art, Ellen “Nan” Plummer spearheaded the museum's first hands-on Egyptian art exhibition and, as Head of Education, was a member of the management team overseeing the museum's strategic and financial direction. Ellen “Nan” Plummer maintains a number of professional associations, including the American Association of Museums, the Southeastern Museums Conference, and the Southeast Art Museum Directors Consortium, where she served as the Consortium's Program Chair in 2006.
