About Ellen Carole Phillips Soroka

Ellen Carole Phillips Soroka - Professional Summary: Ellen Phillips Soroka has a broad range of professional experience as an architectural writer, professor, designer, photographer and thinker. At the IAUS in the 70's under the tutelage of Rem Koolhaas and Peter Eisenman she was introduced to the formal and social implications of architecture before entering The Cooper Union and later MIT where she received an M. Arch. Introduced to the language of Corbu and the environmental focus at MIT following the oil crisis during the 70's were foundations of the language of design she now pursues.

Her research on Carlo Scarpa over a 20 year period has covered a range of topics beginning with his noted play of modern design in counter-point to historical fabrics. Her research on the Great Zimbabwe involved exploring the language of the Shona ‘musha' and its relationship to the stone culture surrounding the Great Zimbabwe.

Committed to architecture as engagement and dialogue, she has practiced and taught architecture. More recently she started her own company after investigating architecture as a modulator of daylight through a Rome Prize Fellowship in 2001-2. Her photography and architectural design reflects an appreciation for architecture that resonates with nature while maintaining the critical edge that identifies her as an environmental modern designer. She lives in Atlanta.
