Assisting those who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, Dr. Wayne Shandera utilizes his knowledge at a clinic that offers numerous services, including chemotherapy, IV therapy, physical rehabilitation services, and dermatology, among other services.

Working with the Thomas Street Health Center, Dr. Wayne Shandera contributes his expertise to a branch of the Harris County Hospital District, recognized as one of the best hospitals in Houston by U.S. News & World Report 2011 rankings. Dr. Shandera’s other work with Harris County includes important research and presentations, such as “Patterns of HIV Infection in Central Americans Treated in Harris County (TX, USA) Hospital District Facilities,” presented at the 7th International Congress for Infectious Diseases in Hong Kong. While studying the epidemiology of acute viral hepatitis, Dr. Wayne Shandera’s work was recognized by Harris County’s Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center with a grant that helped him to advance his commitments.

Dedicating a large portion of his career to the research, education, and treatment of infectious diseases, Dr. Wayne Shandera has played a pivotal role in the advancement of HIV/AIDS in the field of medicine. A pioneer in HIV/AIDS analysis, Dr. Shandera was among the first in the world to research an emerging pattern of disease, which later became known as AIDS. Since becoming a member of the team that introduced initial findings of the debilitating disease to the medical community in the Centers for Disease Control’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Dr. Shandera has advanced the study of HIV/AIDS through decades of research. His recent work includes The Epidemiology of HIV and AIDS Among Central American, South American, and Caribbean Immigrants to Houston, Texas. His work, which has been published by the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health, has provided valuable demographic information with a focus on studies of 240 patients between 1994 and 1998.

As a result of his research, Dr. Wayne Shandera has advocated for increased preventive measures to combat toxoplasmosis, pneumocystis, and tuberculosis. In addition to his research and clinical work with Harris County, Dr. Shandera is currently an Assistant Professor with the Baylor College of Medicine, where he teaches courses on AIDS literature review, the health effects of nuclear exposure, and human rights in medicine.
