About Dr. Paul Matz
Dr. Paul Matz - Professional Summary: Now an expert on traumatic brain injuries (TBI), Dr. Paul Matz studied medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. While there, Dr. Mazt received the Samuel W. Rover and Lewis Rover Award for Excellence in both Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics and in Anatomy and Cell Biology. Dr. Paul Matz served his internship in surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, remaining with the institution to become first a Resident, and later Chief Resident, for the Department of Neurological Surgery.
Over the course of his two decades in medicine, Paul G. Matz, MD, has landed a number of academic roles, including an appointment as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford University and as Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Currently he lives in Chesterfield, Missouri, and serves as a specialty physician at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Dr. Matz maintains an active role in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He chaired the Scientific Program for their Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves annual meeting in 2009. Prior to that appointment, Dr. Matz chaired the Guidelines Committee for this section of the AANS/CNS for the years 2005 to 2008.
A frequent participant in research studies, Paul G. Matz, MD, lent his abilities to an investigation on the cognitive decision-making ability of patients with TBI. He also played a role in a study of the interaction between acute care and rehabilitation strategies for patients with TBI. An ad hoc reviewer for the journal Stroke, Spine, Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Matz is also on the editorial board of Neurosurgery and the Spine Journal.
