A Florida urologist with more than 26 years of experience, Dr. Craig Barkley enjoys a reputation for thorough care aimed at ensuring patients’ long-term health. Dr. Barkley has pursued several research studies to determine new information for treatments for people with kidney disease, cancer, enlarged prostate, and incontinence.

Dr. Craig Barkley’s most recent study tested the efficacy of the drug dutasteride as a means of preventing prostate cancer. For this research, Dr. Barkley partnered with the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline plc., which named the drug Avodart for marketing purposes. Known for his treatment of cancer patients, Dr. Barkley serves as an affiliate member of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa. During his career as a board-certified urologist, Dr. Barkley performed the first hand-assisted laproscopic nephrectomy at Morton Plant Hospital in Pinellas, Florida. Moreover, he developed proficiency in robotic prostatectomy with comprehensive training and completed more than 240 successful surgeries.

Dr. Barkley grew up in Indiana and attended Indiana State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance with honors. During this time, Dr. Craig Barkley held two jobs to pay for his education, working as a Nurse Assistant and an Emergency Room Assistant. After graduating, he pursued medical studies at Indiana University School of Medicine. Upon completion of his Doctor of Medicine, Dr. Barkley accepted an internship at Blodgett Hospital and St. Mary’s Health Care in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He then commenced a residency in general surgery at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus. While training in internal medicine at Ohio State, Dr. Barkley studied another three years as a Resident in urology at the same school.

In 1990, Dr. Barkley worked with a group of approximately 20 urologists and related professionals to develop Urology Specialists of West Florida. This state-of-the-art practice offers patients diagnostic and curative tools, as well as a full support team.
