Founding Harty-Hopton Caterers, Inc., after earning her Bachelor's degree from Sarah Lawrence College, Dorothy Hopton and her business partner turned the Pittsfield catering company into a popular choice among residents of western Massachusetts. Actively involved with food preparation as well as administrative duties, Dorothy Hopton often joined her staff of 12 on events such as museum benefits and weekend festivals. Some of Dorothy Hopton's additional business duties included overseeing payrolls and budgets, organizing promotions, teaching employees, and establishing business relationships. Throughout Dorothy Hopton's eight years with Harty-Hopton Caterers Inc., she received training from famous New York City chefs. At Picholine and FRESCO by Scotto, Dorothy Hopton served as an Assistant Pastry Cook for Terrance Brennan and Assistant Pastry Chef for Vincent Scotto, respectively. Renowned pastry chef Jacques Torres also employed Dorothy Hopton as a Stagiaire. Beyond Harty-Hopton Caterers Inc., Dorothy Hopton also ran two seasonal Massachusetts restaurants—one a Shaker-inspired café at Hancock Shaker Village, and the other, a French-style bistro called the Courtyard Café, at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. After nearly a decade, Dorothy Hopton joined Restaurant Associates as the Executive Dining Room Manager for top financial firms United Bank of Switzerland and Morgan Stanley. Dorothy Hopton continued efforts to educate this larger staff about food preparation and other important elements of the job during daily staff meetings, while performing administrative functions such as hiring new employees, handling payroll, and developing the staff schedule. In this role, Dorothy Hopton played a crucial role in many of the companies' corporate events and dinner parties. In the pursuit of her degrees in nursing, Dorothy Hopton emerged as an impressive student, receiving an invitation to join the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International. In 2007, the Eastern Nursing Research Society bestowed upon Dorothy Hopton a First Place Award for Outstanding BS Poster Presentation at the 19th Annual Scientific Sessions of the Eastern Nursing Research Society. When she is not working, Dorothy Hopton enjoys running and hiking, listening to classical music and attending performing arts events, particularly ballet. She continues to indulge her passion for cooking, as well.
