Debbie Yow - Professional Summary
Debbie Yow, Director of Athletics at North Carolina State University since 2010, has focused much of her energy over the last two years on restructuring, goal-setting, and increasing the marketing and branding reach of her department. Currently the supervisor of 23 varsity programs at the school, Yow has clearly stated her goal of providing staff and coaches under her supervision with a full complement of resources necessary to ensure that student-athletes maintain the highest possible athletic performance. She also believes that student-athletes deserve the chance to excel as much in the classroom as on the playing field. Among her first-year achievements, Debbie Yow counts assisting NC State to increase its Director’s Cup standing, a compilation of accomplishments for all National Collegiate Athletic Association varsity sports, by 22 points, as well as overseeing a school record when more than 200 athletes earned places on the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll.
Prior to accepting her current position at the head of the NC State Wolfpack, Debbie Yow spent 16 years in a similar position leading the Terrapins at the University of Maryland, where she directed 27 sports and more than 700 student athletes. During her Maryland career, Yow and her teams of coaches and players garnered 18 national championships and a ranking in the top 7 percent of all National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I schools. Debbie Yow also earned distinction at the University of Maryland when she reversed a decade-long trend and balanced the school’s athletic budget and reduced a pre-existing $51 million debt to $7.6 million. In addition, Yow increased private and corporate donations to the university’s athletics programs threefold and oversaw multi-million-dollar upgrades to existing facilities, including the men’s and women’s basketball facility at Comcast Center.
Earlier in her career, Debbie Yow spent four years as the Athletic Director at Saint Louis University after successful tenures coaching women’s basketball at the University of Kentucky, the University of Florida, and Oral Roberts University. A prolific writer, Yow has authored dozens of magazine articles and books on sports and athletic management.
