Software Engineer for Embeded Devices

June 2012 – December 2012 (7 months)Media City UK, Manchester

As part of a multi-faceted team we delivered the first release of the new Connected Red Button on the Virgin Media Tivo box, which enabled users to access the BBC's content that is available via IP.

We worked in an agile environment to deliver the front end of the next generation of red button service. Writing TDD producing a state model on a cross applications framework in ActionScript 2.

As part of my role I also wrote Ruby and Python Scripts that would take control of the Tivo and analyse output from the Red Button front end which enabled accurate memory profiling and enhanced some BDD automation.

As part of the front end team I also aided in creating a proof of concept android application that displayed the red button content via the set top box, acting as a second screen, allowing the user to watch BBC content on the television whilst browsing Red Button content in the android application and launching content via the mobile device to view on the television.

I also got involved in an outreach project where I collaborated with Sean Barnes preparing and delivering a 'break out' talk/Q&A on the Raspberry Pi.

ActionScript3 Developer using the Flex 4.6 SDK

January 2012 – May 2012 (5 months)Manchester, United Kingdom

Working within the BBC television platforms department in Salford. We were tasked with ongoing development from an existing Pure MVC code base, both in terms of new features and rectification of existing bugs. Development was performed in an agile environment on a two week sprint cycle, driven from BDD scenarios developed by the product owner. Management of the development cycle was achieved through JIRA and subject to constant testing. The development platform was IntelliJ IDEA using MAVEN and ANT to achieve automated dependency management, unit testing and custom build routines. The final application is compiled to produce an AIR package for deployment to stand alone set top boxes for public consumption. Using Pure MVC, IntelliJ 10.5, AS3, XML, SVN, SSH and external devices.

Working in an agile environment we developed an in-store point of sale application. Utilising a factory style design pattern the application used OOP to dynamically render to screen each element of the product, providing the user with custom generated products for replacement windows and doors, integrating REST services enabled users to store the estimates, retrieve any desired estimate and progress that through to booking a home survey. Together with UAT and Client staging a rapid development cycle took the software to market .Using Flex 4.5, AS3, JSON, SVN, Hg, Django and Python.http://www.homebasedoorsandwindows.co.uk
