David Moyes christened David William Moyes is a football manager, who was born on April 25, 1963 in Glasgow, Scotland.
David Moyes began his football playing career from Celtic in 1980. Playing as a centre half, he improved his game with every match and played for various teams including, Cambridge United, Bristol City, Shrewsbury Town, Dunfermline Athletic and Hamilton Academical. In 1993, he moved to Preston North End and played 143 games for the team in which he scored 15 goals. During his playing career between 1980 and 1998, he has appeared in more than 550 league matches.
David Moyes prepared for a management career from the age of 22, as he used to take coaching badges, compile notes on techniques and tactics followed by managers he had played under.
In January 1998, David Moyes became the manager of Preston North End when the team was not in a good shape. His guidance and brilliant managerial skills helped the team to avoid relegation at the end of the 1997-1998 season. Preston North End reached the Division 2 playoffs in the 1998-1999 season but was unable to succeed in that season. In the 1999-2000 season, David Moyes trained his team, which played well to win the Nationwide Football League Division Two Champions. Under his management, Preston played 243 matches, in which they won 113, drew 67 and lost 63. Observing Preston’s success with David Moyes, premier league clubs like Manchester City, Southampton and West Ham offered him managerial positions.
On March 14, 2002 David Moyes began to head the Everton team as manager and the club’s first game under his management was played against the Fulham F.C. at Goodison Park. Everton’s player, David Unsworth scored a goal just after thirty seconds into the game and won the match 2-1. Everton under the skillful training of David Moyes emerged as a powerful team in the 2002-2003 season, winning a UEFA Cup spot and finished 7th in the premier league.
The 2003-2004 season was not a favorable season for the Evertons and David Moyes, for the team struggled, unable to stop a downward slide and finished 17th in the season. Despite of growing concerns within and outside the team, he remained as manager and brought about many changes like bringing in players from other teams. His tactics helped the team to improve to the 4th place in the league and win a place in the Champions League (2004-2005).
Everton under the management of David Moyes proved to be a consistent team in the 2007-2008 season. By finishing within the top 6 places in the Premier League (2007-2008) season, Everton team became a confident, well-prepared side for the following season.
As Everton manager, David Moyes was awarded League Managers Association (LMA) – ‘LMA Manager of the Year’ in 2002-2003 and 2004-2005. He also became ‘Manager of the Month’, Barclays Premiership, in November 2002, September 2004, January 2006 and also in Barclays Premier League in February 2008.
