Darren Ward is a professional football goalkeeper born on May 11, 1974 in Worksop, England.
He was selected for the Wales national team in 2000 and has won five caps for the team as of August 2008.
Darren Ward kick-started his football career at Mansfield Town in 1992 and has played 81 matches for it during his stint there. He switched to Notts County in 1995, following which he made 252 appearances for the club. He moved onto Nottingham Forest in 2001 and represented the club in 123 games during his tenure, which lasted for three seasons.
Darren Ward signed a two-year deal for Norwich City in July 2004 and was mostly confined to the club’s reserve team. He played his lone match for the side in an away game against Charlton Athletic in the 2004-05 season. On August 4, 2006, he signed a new deal with Sunderland and made his debut for the club in October that year against Stoke City. Darren Ward performed brilliantly for Sunderland as a goalkeeper and made an exceptional save in a match against Southampton that George Burley, the Southampton manager, described was in the style of the legendary English goalkeeper Gordon Banks. He made his Premiership debut for Sunderland in December 2007 in the club’s 1-0 victory against Derby. During the winter transfer window, he spurned an offer from the Scottish club Rangers and chose to stay with the Black Cats. As of January 2008, Darren Ward has played in 33 matches for Sunderland.
