About Coney Island Hospital

Coney Island Hospital - Products and Services:

For more than a century, Coney Island Hospital has provided short- and long-term treatment to residents of Brooklyn and other areas in and around the greater New York City area, building a history of quality patient care and professionalism. Founded in 1875, Coney Island Hospital traces its origins to a small first aid station off West 3rd Street where beachgoers went to receive treatment for minor injuries, most frequently feet cut by broken glass. Twenty-seven years later, Coney Island Hospital moved into a larger residence on Sea Breeze Avenue, enabling a greater range of emergency services to meet the needs of residents and vacationers in the summer months. Featuring 20 beds and emergency treatment facilities, Coney Island Hospital (then known as Reception Hospital or, informally, the Sea Breeze Hospital) served as a much-needed local presence in immediate medical care during this period. Due to substantial population increases, Coney Island Hospital finally found a permanent home in 1910 with the construction of a 100-bed hospital comprised of six buildings: the Main Hospital Building, the Employees Dormitory, the Nurses Home, the Laboratory Building, the Laundry Building, and the Power Plant. Sufficient for the next four decades, Coney Island Hospital again underwent expansion in 1954 with the opening of two white brick towers that remain to this day. More recently, Coney Island Hospital added a new impatient bed tower to its network of facilities, an integral part of the hospital since 2006.

Today, Coney Island Hospital functions as the top medical provider for individuals and families throughout southern Brooklyn, serving residents from Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, Sheepshead Bay, Gerritsen Beach, and elsewhere. With 371 beds, a full-service emergency department, and more than 18,000 discharges and 300,000 outpatients seen annually, Coney Island Hospital maintains an impeccable reputation for clinical excellence and quality care.
