Clayton Mathewson Ph.D.

Since 1988, couples, groups, and individuals seeking counseling and therapy in Portland, Oregon, have chosen to work with Dr. Clayton Mathewson. While pursing his doctorate, he authored the book A Theoretical Study of Masculine Archetypes: Embraced and Rejected in Children's Cinema. With an interest in men’s issues, Dr. Clayton Mathewson has served as the facilitator of various Portland-area men’s groups for over 17 years.

Dr. Clayton Mathewson pursued post-graduate work at Pacifica Graduate School in Carpinteria, California, where he earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Depth Psychology and Mythology. Depth psychology evaluates underlying motives in human thought and behavior by examining conscious and unconscious elements. Among his therapeutic methods, Dr. Mathewson continues to follow research in the field of relational depth psychology. The National Board for Certified Counselors and Affiliates, Inc., a credentialing nonprofit, recognizes him as a professional in his field.

Dr. Clayton Mathewson pursued earlier graduate studies at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, leading to a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology and College Instruction. His undergraduate work includes a B.S. in Psychology with a Minor in Business and Religion from the University of Idaho as well as completion of a vocational program in auto mechanics at Boise State University.

Dr. Clayton Mathewson resides in Vancouver, Washington, with his wife and children, including a daughter in elementary school and two daughters attending college. An avid bicyclist and runner, Dr. Mathewson maintains affiliations with the Clark County Running Club in Vancouver, Washington; the Oregon Road Runners Club of Portland; and bicycle advocacy groups in both Washington and Oregon. He also enjoys playing guitar, meditating, golfing, and fly-fishing.
