Chris Gunter, a professional Welsh football player, was born on July 21, 1989, in Newport. He holds a national diploma in sports studies awarded by the Business and Technician Education Council (BTEC).
Chris Gunter started his international football career in the 2003-04 season, when he played four games for the Welsh school Under-15 development squad. After these appearances, he moved up to the Under-16 Welsh schools squad, playing in a friendly match against the Republic of Ireland and in three games of the Victory Shield tournament. Chris Gunter progressed to the Under-17 Welsh national team and earned eleven caps during the 2005-06 season, including two rounds of the United European Football Association (UEFA) Championship, in which Wales qualified to the top stage.
Chris Gunter played for the Under-19 team in the Milk Cup, an international youth football tournament in Northern Ireland. He earned the distinction of being the second youngest player of the Wales team, when he played for the Under-21 level against Cyprus. On May 26, 2007, Chris Gunter made his debut for the senior Welsh team in a friendly match against New Zealand and also earned the honor of being the youngest Cardiff City player in the team. He played impressively in the qualifying matches of the Euro 2008 against the Republic of Ireland and Germany, both of which ended in a draw.
Chris Gunter began his football career as a striker with the Durham Colts and the Albion Rovers clubs. After this initial period, he signed with the youth team of Cardiff City in 1997 and played as a full-back. On August 1, 2006, Chris Gunter signed his first professional contract with the club, and later that month, he made his debut for the club in a game against Barnet in the League Cup. For his impressive first-team performances, in March 2007, he won the Apprentice of the Year award of the Football League.
Amidst bids from the Premiership club Everton, On December 24, 2007, Chris Gunter moved to Tottenham Hotspur for a whooping fee of £3 million. However, he joined the club after the transfer window open on January 1, 2008. Later that month, he made his Spurs debut in a replay of the third round of the Football Association (FA) Cup match against Reading.
