Charles L. Norman

With more than three decades of experience in institutions of higher learning, Dr. Charles L. Norman continues to provide administrative leadership at his current post. Dr. Norman serves as the Dean of the School of Continuing Education at The American University in Cairo. With a penchant for travel, he has found a home in Egypt while he provides guidance and direction to this school, which enrolls approximately 38,000 students each year.

Established in 1919, The American University in Cairo offers a liberal arts education and aims to link the cultures of the Eastern and Western worlds through its educational experience. The independent, nonprofit, apolitical, non-sectarian institution is accredited in both Egypt and the United States. As Dean of the School of Continuing Education, Dr. Charles L. Norman is responsible for the management of programs that assist students in furthering their education. The school offers courses in various areas, including the English language, computer and information technology, Arabic and translation studies, and business.

Prior to his assignment in Cairo, Dr. Charles L. Norman spent 17 years at The University of Tennessee (UT) in Knoxville. He held a number of titles during his tenure there. In his final post at UT, Dr. Norman served as Special Assistant to the Executive Vice President. An example of the far-reaching tasks with which he was charged is the evaluation of the impact on the state of Tennessee of various outreach and engagement programs sponsored by the university, including the economic impact of the school’s five campuses and two institutes.

Before taking his position at UT, Dr. Charles L. Norman worked for the University of Georgia (UGA) in the Georgia Extension Service, starting as a County Extension Agent in 1978. Dr. Norman accepted positions of increasing responsibility in the Extension Service over the next 12 years, ending up as the Assistant to the Vice President and Coordinator of Special Programs.

While working at UGA, Dr. Charles L. Norman earned a Master of Agriculture in Extension Education and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration.
