After attending King Edward VII School in Houghton, Johannesburg, Gough began his soccer career with the Wits University Football Club, which now plays in the Premier Soccer League. Aspiring to play professionally in Britain, Gough failed in his first tryout for the Rangers Football Club, subsequently signing a provisional contract with Charlton Athletic Football Club. Playing with the club for 11 seasons, Gough served as a team captain and led the Rangers to nine consecutive league championships.
