Carrie Shulman - Professional Summary:     [ A renowned board certified Neurosurgeon, Carrie Shulman, M.D. possesses more than a decade of experience and training. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Science and Technology in International Affairs at Georgetown University in 1990, Carrie Shulman, M.D. enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1994. After completing basic training and Officer Candidate School, Carrie Shulman, M.D. earned a commission as a Second Lieutenant, and consequently received a medical school scholarship through the United States Army Health Professions Scholarship Program.

Carrie Shulman, M.D. enrolled at the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. in 1994. Studying neurosurgery, Carrie Shulman, M.D. demonstrated academic excellence and leadership both in and out of the classroom. Carrie Shulman, M.D. would earn the Student Council Service Award and the Jesse Barber Award for Excellence in Neurosurgery from Howard University in 1997. Maintaining close ties with the Army, many of the studies that Carrie Shulman, M.D. worked on were often in conjunction with the U.S. Armed Forces, or presented at military hospitals around the country. Most notably, Carrie Shulman’s presentation on anencephalic neonatal care earned her a Poster Presentation Award from the National Medical Association Conference in Honolulu in 1997.

Graduating with a medical degree from Howard University in 1998, Carrie Shulman, M.D. returned to active duty in the Army later that year. Joining the staff at the prominent Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Carrie Shulman, M.D. trained as an intern and resident Neurosurgeon, specializing in neuroendoscopic procedures. During her training, Carrie Shulman, M.D. assisted in writing and receiving a federal grant for a Spinal Injury Database at Walter Reed in 2002. After becoming the first and only woman to complete medical training at Walter Reed and the first female neurosurgeon to complete training in the Army, Carrie Shulman, M.D. earned a Meritorious Service Award in March 2005.

Following the completion of her training, Carrie Shulman, M.D. functioned as an active duty Neurosurgeon for the Army, eventually becoming Chief of Neurosurgery. She also served in Operation Iraqi Freedom as Neurosurgical Director for Theater and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel prior to leaving the military in 2009. Carrie Shulman, M.D. received two Army commendations for her exceptional skills and leadership.

At present, Carrie Shulman, M.D. functions as Director of Cerebrovascular Surgery at Kaiser Permanente in Portland, Oregon. Carrie Shulman, M.D. intends to establish a surgical practice focusing on minimally invasive neuroendoscopic surgery.
