About Carolyn Mattocks

Carolyn Mattocks is an accomplished scholar and educator who is using her knowledge to help children find their passions. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from North Carolina Central University, graduating summa cum laude. Carolyn Mattocks had always thought she wanted to be a lawyer, and earned acceptance at a prestigious law school, but during her senior year of college she realized that teaching and writing were her true passions. In light of this, she went on to obtain a master’s degree in public administration. With her degrees, Carolyn Mattocks has taught a variety of history courses at both community and four-year colleges.

In January 2011, Carolyn Mattocks established a 501(c)3 non-profit organization called “I Can Do Anything,” whose mission is to help children explore career options, learn to network, and gain experience with basic life skills. Because Ms. Mattocks didn’t realize what her true professional aspirations were until later in life, she wants to help children avoid this problem through learning about career options early on. Ms. Mattocks created the “I Can Do Anything” organization after writing a book of the same title, which deals with some of the same difficulties young people face when deciding which job path to pursue. With the organization, Ms. Mattocks wants to ensure that children not only begin thinking about their careers early on, but realize the many possibilities they have. “I Can Do Anything” provides career assessments, self-assessments, and skill assessments so that children learn about their strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. The organization also provides workshops to provide children instruction on networking, self-management, and life and self-image skills.

In addition to her work through “I Can Do Anything,” Carolyn Mattocks often gives speeches and seminars on the topic of career planning. S. Michele Rucker, a counselor at the Booker T. Washington Public Charter School for Technical Arts, was impressed with Ms. Mattocks’ presentation called “Finding Your Purpose in Life.” She wrote: “The young ladies were able to take away with them a sense of purpose and direction to take their lives. The pointers you gave were right on time and the examples you shared were very interesting.”
