Carlos Villanueva, born on February 5, 1986 in La Ligua, Chile, began his international career as part of the national squad in the 2005 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Youth Cup held at the Netherlands. He made his much-awaited international debut at the senior level in the 2007 Copa America Cup, held in Venezuela where he surprised the world by scoring a goal in his very first match. His goal, scored through a free kick, helped Chile to a 3-2 victory against Ecuador. Carlos Villanueva was named ‘Chile’s Player of the Year’ for his performance.
Carlos Villanueva kicked off his soccer career in 2003 with Deportes La Serena in the Chilean second division. In 2004, he joined CD Audax Italiano de La Florida, another Chilean football club, based in the city of Santiago, as a midfielder. 2007 was a successful year for Carlos Villanueva where his includes 24 goals in 37 games that he played.
At the beginning of 2008 Audax Italiano loaned out Carlos Villanueva to Blackburn Rovers F. C, an English Premier League Football club in Lancashire for a year and later agreed on the terms regarding a three-year deal with the same club.
