About Byron Lerner

Byron Lerner - Professional Summary:

A successful businessman and former college basketball player, Byron Lerner dedicates his time to volunteer and charity work in his community. Byron Lerners call to mentor children has affected the lives of thousands of young people. In honor of his contributions, the mayor of the village of East Hills, New York, has recognized Lerner as one of the towns 60 most important citizens.

Though he spent years working in business, Lerner has always preferred the basketball court to the office. He attended Hunter College, which is part of the City University of New York system, and played on the basketball team as an undergraduate. After college, Byron Lerner spent several years guiding troubled students in New York City public schools. Lerner worked for a decade in business before he discovered a way to combine his concern for youth with his love of sports: coaching basketball.

Byron Lerner coached basketball teams from a wide variety of leagues. He shared his talents and experience with the Catholic Youth Organization, the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center, and the Amateur Athletic Union of the USA, Inc. Byron Lerner reserved much of his time and talent for the Roslyn Booster Basketball Club, Inc. (RBBC), where he volunteered for 23 years.

Byron Lerner wholeheartedly embraced the RBBCs mission to teach schoolchildren basketball skills, good sportsmanship, and the value of healthy competition. The coeducational league serves more than 1,000 children each year and is open to students in 1st through 12th grade from the Roslyn and East Williston, New York, school districts. Byron Lerner joyfully shared his love of the game with the next generation of basketball players.

In addition to coaching for the RBBC, Lerner also sat on the group?s Board of Directors for 17 years, 7 of those as President. While on the board, Byron Lerner worked to make basketball available to children of all backgrounds. He organized scholarships to allow youth from low-income homes to attend summer basketball camps, and he planned charity events to raise funds for the RBBC. Lerner also brought in the Ernie and Bernie Clinic for the Kids so that local youth could learn from professional basketball players.

Byron Lerners community involvement does not end with sports. He contributes to a wide range of charitable causes, including Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, and Schneider Children?s Hospital (now the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children?s Medical Center of New York). Byron Lerner lives in Roslyn, New York, with his wife.
