Bruce Hay - Professional Summary:
Professor Bruce Hay has earned significant renown in the field of law. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in French and Political Science, Bruce Hay also attended the prestigious Harvard Law School, where he obtained his Juris Doctor in 1988. Currently, Bruce Hay teaches at the latter institution, with focuses ranging from environmental law and contracts to complex litigation and torts.
In 1998, the Dean called Bruce Hay a “brilliant scholar and teacher who brings much to the [Harvard] Law School” in The Harvard Crimson, Inc., the school’s student publication. As well as participating as an active component of Harvard Law School as a tenured professor, Bruce Hay has also made significant contributions to the intellectual culture of the campus, such as directing productions of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," David Auburn's "Proof," and Margaret Edson's "W;t," composing and recording music for each production.
An active contributor to academic knowledge, Bruce Hay has authored a variety of respected articles and professional works. In 2003, Bruce Hay wrote the legal paper, “Sting Operations, Undercover Agents and Entrapment,” which presented an economic model for sting operations policy. The article was later utilized by Harvard Law School's John M. Olin Center for Law, Economics, and Business in its discussion paper series. Bruce Hay also co-wrote “Manufacturer Liability for Harm Caused by Consumers to Others,” as part of an edition of The American Economic Review. In 2008, Cardozo Law Review published Hay's “The Earth Turned to Bring Us Closer,” a contribution to a symposium on the French philosopher Alain Badiou, in which Hay analyzed the film 21 Grams using several philosophical theories.
Before becoming a professor at Harvard Law School, Bruce Hay employed his talents at the law firm Sidley & Austin, currently referred to as Sidley Austin LLP, where he concentrated on general trial and appellate litigation, environmental law, telecommunications industry regulation.
