Prior to working in the investment management industry, Brett Messing was an Attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, where he handled corporate transactions. In 1990, Brett Messing joined the financial services industry when he joined Goldman Sachs. For nearly a decade, Brett Messing directed a team that handled billions of dollars in client assets and served as Co-Head of the Restricted Stock Group. After leaving Goldman Sachs, Brett Messing became a Partner at Oscar Capital Management, a firm founded by his law school classmate, Anthony Scaramucci. Oscar Capital managed over $900 million in hedge fund and separate accounts. In 2001, Oscar Capital engaged Merrill Lynch to review strategic alternatives which led to the sale of the firm to Neuberger Berman, a subsidiary of Lehman Brothers. After the acquisition, Brett Messing was a Managing Director at Neuberger Berman and Lehman Brothers handling portfolios and developing new business until 2005. That same year, Brett Messing founded GPS Partners LLC, a hedge fund firm that managed over $2 billion in hedge fund assets primarily focused in the energy sector. Brett Messing’s experience in the world of investment management inspired him to co-write The Forewarned Investor: Don’t Get Fooled Again by Corporate Fraud, published in 2006. The first book of its kind, Messing’s work teaches shareholders how to identify corporate frauds. Brett Messing serves as Senior Advisor to C40 Cities, which is chaired by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, and as the Terence M. Considine Visiting Senior Research Fellow in Law, Economics and Business at Harvard Law School.
