About Bolikhamxay Tourism

Bolikhamxay (or: Borikhamsay, Bolikhamxai, Borikamsai...)

is the 10th largest province in Lao PDR with an area of 15,977 square kilometers and has population of more than 227,000 people (2006)

The province capital of Paksane lies some 150 km by road from the nation capital of Vientiane. Administratively the province is divided into six districts; Paksane (Pakxan), Khamkeut, Thaphabath, Pakkading, Bolikhan, and Viengthong.

North-west : Vientiane
South : Khammuane Province
East : Vietnam (NgeAnh, Hating)
West : Thailand (Nakhon Phanom, Nong Khai)

 

History of the Province

Bolikhamxay was established in 1967 during the Lao revolution period, separated from Vientiane and Khammuane Province

On 12th October 1968, Bolikhamxay was first announced as a province combined with 4 districts: Bolikhan, Khamkeut, Viengthong and a part of Hinboun.
On 6th March 1984, the province was officially established, combined with 6 districts as present days.

 

Meaning of ‘BOLIKHAMXAY’
‘Boli’ from Bolikhan District, the old city of the province.
‘Kham’ from Khamkeut District, the old city since 1350s.
‘Xay’ a Lao word, means “Victory” of the Laos' revolution

 

Bolikhamxay is known as the beautiful land rich of nature resource for tourist destination.

Tad luek - Tad Xay are tourist attraction sites variety of species and biodiversities

Khamkeut District is the most beautiful place in the province

Wat Phabath - Phonsane is historical site for Buddhism

Borikhan is cavernous site for “Nang Phom Horm” (Miss nice smell hair, Lao famous story)

Tourist Attractions

Wat Phabath (Phabath Temple)

83 km from Vientiane on the South 13 Road. This important pilgrimage site with its huge " foot print " of Lord Buddha is a significant place for all Buddhists in the country. The people in the area believe that when someone is passing this place, one must stop for a while to pray respect to the spirits for a good journey

Phonsane Temple
Located near Wat Phabath. This temple overlooking the Mekong river is well known for "Bang Fai Phayanak" or the "Naga Rocket", a mysterious and still unexplained phenomenon, which occurs every year during the 15th day of the 11th (according to the lunar calendar), when small fire balls in different colours shot out from the river for about 10 to 15 meters and disappear in the sky

Ban Na (Na village)

Near Wat Phabath. This village at the edge of the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area offers guided trekking tours into the nearby bamboo belt and forest, it is known for its wild elephants which can be seen with a bit of luck from an observation tower close to a salt lick. The villagers are also accepting tourist for home stay

Tad Leuk (Leuk Waterfall)

From Wat Phabath 16 km and 20 km in from the South 13 Road. Located in Phou Khao Khouay NPA, This beautiful waterfall is the most accessible attraction in the park and ideal for relaxing, swimming, camping and trekking, Tad Luek had a Visitor Center and a "Nature Trail"

Tad Xai

Cascading over seven steps, Tad Xay is arguably the most beautiful waterfall in the Phou Khao Kuay NPA. It is particularly attractive during the rainy season, and can be easily reached by a nice boat and trekking tour from Ban Hadkai

Pha Muang Cave

Just 54 km from Paksane district on the Route 4B, this stunning limestone outcrop with its small cave is the center of ‘Nang Pomhome’ the famous Lao legend

Tad NamPa

Traveling by boat starting from a nice sandy beach on the bank of Ban NamPa, a fairly typical Lao village, you will see the exciting nature view of Tad NamPa waterfall. Ban Nam Pa is just 25 minutes drive from Paksane on the Route 4B. The village also has handicraft products made by local people

Wat Dan
A series of colorful Buddhist buildings on the rocky outcrops surrounded by the beautiful nature. There are many large Buddha images, a holy pool, flower gardens, and rocks have interesting stories of the legend ‘Nang Sip Song’ (The Twelve Ladies)

Tham Kaep (Kaep Cave)
Located in Phou Kout, The Provincial Protected Area near Ban Nong Boua, from Paksane 16 km. This mysterious attraction is believed to be a sacred place for local people. Walking into a good forest then climbing quite steeply, you will arrive at a small waterfall and a variety of rock overhand, which provide a shelter for relaxing. The journey continues to the top of escarpment to see widely spectacular views

NongSaMan

Wonderful views await the visitor on top of this long limestone mountain with its steep cliff beautiful waterfall and lush green vegetation, it is located about 28 km east of Paksane

Tad Vangfong
In the midst of lush green vegetation. This beautiful waterfall at the confluent of the Nam Kading and Nam Theun rivers can be reached after an hour by boat, starting from Ban Phonsy, Pakkading District

Elephant Rock
A huge limestone near Ban Napong, Pakkading district on the Route 8 with its shape looks like a man riding on the elephant


Cool Spring
This spring of the Nam Mang river can be reached by turning left at Ban Phontan, along the Route 8, and walking 2 km pass Ban Napavan. Surrounded by woods, it is a very nice place for picnic and refreshing swim in its cool water

Pha Nang Hong
This outstanding mountain is so close to Lak Sao, Khamkeut district. There is a quite steep trail to the view point to see the fantastic views of Lak Sao and the mountain on the Lao-Vietnamese border

Tai Taeng Tribe in Ban NongOr and Ban NaPae
The Tai Teng form a small, but colourful Lao ethnic minority group. Mostly they live around Ban NongOr and Ban Napae, 17km from Laksao. Besides rice farming they are well known for their silk handicraft

Dragon Cave
The cave located along the Route 8 to Khamkeut district, is reminiscent of a huge dome with wonderfully formed by stalactite

Hot Spring

Located near Ban NongOr along the road to Vietnam. The hot water comes from below the river bed and piped to a series of baths. There is a bathing service for tourists

4. Rocket Festival. Ban Pakpung and Ban Kuay, Paksane District. In May
5. Boat Racing Festival. Paksane District. 15th of 11th of lunar calendar (In November)
6. Hmong New Year Festival. Ban Pha Mung, Bolikhan; Ban Kor Hai - NaPae, Khamkeut; Ban ThongNaMy, Pakkading (In December)
