About Bill Rauch
Over a nearly 10-year period, Mayor Bill Rauch oversaw an impressive period of growth and economic activity for the town of Beaufort, South Carolina. First elected in 1999, Bill Rauch served three consecutive terms as Mayor after completing two terms on the Beaufort City Council.
As Mayor of Beaufort, Bill Rauch combined a unique background in big city politics and journalism. The Press Secretary for New York City Mayor Ed Koch’s second and third terms, Bill Rauch well understood the importance of strong communication and transparency in politics. As such, during his time as Mayor of Beaufort, Bill Rauch led a concerted effort to involve Beaufort citizens in city politics as much as possible. Bill Rauch also worked diligently to maintain good working relationships with Beaufort business owners to ensure the continued economic prosperity of the town. Through his efforts, Bill Rauch was able to help Beaufort expand its landmass, increase its local business, and upgrade its bond rating twice.
Before becoming a politician, Bill Rauch worked in the field of journalism as a reporter and editor for a number of newspapers across the country. Some of the many newspapers Bill Rauch worked for as a journalist include Harbor Light, The Indianapolis Star, Village Voice, The Real Paper, and Fire Island News. Bill Rauch carried his passion for journalism with him when he moved to Beaufort, founding the city’s first Sunday paper, The Lowcountry Ledger. Over time, Bill Rauch successfully grew The Lowcountry Ledger into one of Beaufort’s most widely read newspapers with more than $500,000 in annual revenues. As an undergraduate, Bill Rauch attended Harvard College, where he received his Bachelor of Arts with honors in American History.
