WinnCompanies

by Bill Deyesso

I was fortunate to spend 27 years at the Boston real estate firm WinnCompanies, overseeing development operations as Executive Vice President. Whether it was medical office buildings, garden-style apartment communities, or high-profile projects in downtown Boston, I took pride in the exceptional levels of project management we provided to clients. WinnCompanies was launched in 1971 with a development project in Salem, Massachusetts, involving 250 high-quality affordable housing units. Our operations expanded rapidly throughout New England in the 1970s, as our reputation spread. By the 1980s, WinnCompanies was firmly established as a premier real estate developer, building the Millennium Bostonian Hotel, which maintains its status to this day as a luxury hotel destination in Boston. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, WinnCompanies expanded its property holdings throughout New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and even into the urban South. More than the standards of excellence set at WinnCompanies, it was a strong sense of social responsibility that really attracted me to the firm. The spirit continues to this day, with a prominent example being WinnCompanies’ efforts in 2000 to transform the Mission Main apartments in Boston. Offering a long-term community vision, WinnCompanies worked with the Boston Housing Authority to turn a drug- and gang-infested housing project into an award-winning development that truly embodies the word “inclusion.” Today, Mission Main serves as a diverse and welcoming community, offering more than 400 newly constructed three- to four-bedroom garden-style units, as well as more than 100 one-bedroom units in a mid-rise building. WinnCompanies also maintains a significant connection to the Boston community through philanthropy, giving to charities such as the Anti-Defamation League, Habitat for Humanity, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the St. Mary's Women and Children's Center. I feel privileged to have engaged in nearly three decades work with WinnCompanies, helping it achieve its current level of success.

Benefits of Chamber of Commerce Membership

by Bill Deyesso

As an independent businessman, I maintain membership in the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and know the value of chamber participation. Chambers of commerce are membership associations representing a diversity of business in the areas they serve. Chamber participation provides members with multiple benefits, including:

1. Chamber participation provides multiple networking opportunities.

2. Most chambers of commerce affect local, regional, statewide, and national policy by providing advocacy, lobbying, and other initiatives that maintain member businesses’ abilities to compete in the local and global marketplace.

3. Locally, chambers of commerce advocate policy that makes development possible and keeps the cost of doing business affordable.

4. Chambers of commerce offer educational opportunities.

5. Many chambers promote ethical business practices and provide achievement recognition and awards for outstanding companies.

6. The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce sponsors leadership development programs at local business schools aimed at identifying and working with future business leaders.

7. Along with networking opportunities, chamber members also enjoy social opportunities to enjoy time with fellow businessmen and women.

8. The chamber makes cooperative marketing, public relations, and advertising opportunities available to members.

9. Members have the opportunity to participate in and sponsor chamber events, which can help get their name out to potential customers.

10. In areas that have a large amount of tourism, chambers of commerce can help create better visibility among visitors to the area.
