The Devon-born defender kick started his career as a youth player at Plymouth Argyle F.C. in 2005 and continued to be there till 2007. But in the summer of 2007 he moved to Swindon Town F.C. Ben Tozer made his debut for it as a makeshift left-back in the Carling Cup match, in the club's League Cup tie against Charlton Athletic in August 2007. His rapid progress continued apace since then.
In November 2007, he started a four-day trial with Everton F.C. but not much came out of it. He returned in time for Swindon Town’s Football Association (FA) Cup game against Forest Green Rovers F.C. In all, Ben Tozer made seven first-team appearances for Swindon Town, including those in the English League One, English FA Cup and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
He penned a four-and-a-half year deal with Newcastle United F.C., and completed his move on January 7, 2008. After being on the substitute’s bench, Ben Tozer finally earned his taste of first-team on May 11, 2008 in a game against Everton.
