After graduating from Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg with a BA in Communications and Industrial Psychology, Basil Couvaras obtained a post-graduate degree in Industrial Psychology at Johannesburg's University of Witwatersrand. Basil Couvaras developed the concept for Atlanta Bread Company in 1993 with his brother, Jerry Couvaras. After purchasing a Georgia sandwich shop in 1995, the two have grown the company to more than 100 franchises throughout the United States. Basil Couvaras played an essential role in re-engineering Atlanta Bread Company’s menu over the years. In 2010, the Zagat Fast-Food Survey recognized Atlanta Bread by naming them one of the top 5 large chains in the Healthy Options category. The franchise also earned honors as one of Parents magazine’s 10 Best Fast-Casual Restaurants in 2009. In addition, Health magazine recognized Atlanta Bread as one of America's Top 10 Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants, and Fast Casual magazine placed Atlanta Bread Company on its list of the Top 100 Movers and Shakers. Atlanta Bread’s menu features innovative sandwiches, soup, paninis, and breads. When he is not working with the franchise, Basil Couvaras enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. Basil Couvaras also actively participates in his community, donating his time and energy to various school- and church-related functions, as well as charities such as Prevent Child Abuse Georgia. Through Atlanta Bread , Basil Couvaras also generously supports the American National Red Cross and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, among other organizations. In addition, the company's franchises donate leftover bakery products to local charities and soup kitchens.
