A Brief History of Krav Maga: Part 1 of 2
Prepared by the Office of Anthony Jean-Claude
Outside of his career as an entrepreneur and business executive, Anthony Jean-Claude participates in a number of recreational activities, including the self-defense technique of Krav Maga. Krav Maga has a history as an elite hand-to-hand combat method. Today, it serves as the official self-defense system of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and is used by other top military, police, and intelligence-gathering groups worldwide, such as the CIA, the DEA, and the Belgian Armed Forces.
Slovakian Imi Sde-Or created Krav Maga in the 1930s to protect himself and his family and friends from anti-Semitic gangs that roamed the streets of his home city of Bratislava. An accomplished athlete, Sde-Or participated in a variety of sports during his youth and won the Slovakian Youth Wrestling Championship of 1928. However, he learned firsthand that his background in wrestling and boxing ill-prepared him for the brutality of street fighting, and he adopted a fighting/defense style that emphasized quick attacks on the body’s most vulnerable areas, such as the face, neck, and groin.
Fleeing Slovakia for Palestine during World War II, Sde-Or joined the Jewish paramilitary force Haganah. Soon thereafter, he began training soldiers in Krav Maga. In 1948, he was named Chief Instructor for Physical Fitness and Krav Maga in the newly formed IDF, and he began developing the technique to best serve members of the military.
Over subsequent decades, Krav Maga spread rapidly from Israel to the United States and beyond. The Israeli Krav Maga Association served as the primary training and sanctioning body until the technique was introduced in other countries. Since the early 1990s, the technique has grown rapidly in popularity, due largely to its integration of moves from a variety of self-defense practices, including judo, karate, and jujitsu.
