Ann Cavoukian - Professional Summary:
A leading expert on matters of privacy and technology, Ann Cavoukian is serving her third term as Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, a position she has held since 1997. Her work over the years has also garnered Ms. Cavoukian numerous accolades. In 2011, she was honoured for her concept of Privacy by Design with the Kristian Beckman Award from the International Federation for Information Processing.
Ann Cavoukian’s Privacy by Design concept promotes embedding privacy measures into technology proactively instead of relying solely on regulation. She first conceived of the system in the 1990s, in response to the advent of networked data systems. Ms. Cavoukian realized that legislation would not be enough to protect citizens’ privacy and that technology developers and businesses must be willing to make privacy a primary concern. Ann Cavoukian remains a staunch advocate of applying privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) to create a positive-sum situation, where tradeoffs such as privacy vs. security are not necessary.
Ms. Cavoukian was honoured in 2011 as one of the Top 11 Movers and Shakers in the global smart grid industry by Intelligent Utility magazine. She also has received awards from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the online safety organization WiredSafety, the Ontario Psychological Association, and the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
