Anand Venkatraman - Professional Summary:    

Trained at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr. Anand Venkatraman has conducted innovative research both in India and in the United States. Currently a research associate at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, he investigates a degenerative, progressive genetic disorder known as spinocerebellar ataxia, or SCA. To understand this coordination and movement disorder, Dr. Venkatraman conducts chemical, behavioral, and other genetic tests on mouse model subjects.

Prior to accepting this position, Anand Venkatraman conducted various administrative, educational, and patient care tasks as the Resident Medical Officer of Manesar, Indiana's National Brain Research Centre. In this role he attended to the medical care of human subjects in the Centre's neuroscience studies. He provided examinations, patient monitoring, and first-response emergency care while also managing the Centre's pharmacy and conducting extensive and complex case management work. Before emigrating to the United States, Dr. Venkatraman administered and managed chemotherapy treatments at the Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital's Department of Radiotherapy. As a non-academic junior resident physician, he managed medications for patients in both the outpatient clinics and inpatient wards. For his skilled management and care during the department's busiest times, he earned top ranking among his peers by hospital supervisors.

Anand Venkatraman takes an active role in the local and global community. For three years he volunteered as a speaker and educator for the Delhi chapter of the EduHeal Foundation, a registered non-governmental organization that provides public health education and awareness activities. He has also worked with the Indian chapter of the Make a Wish Foundation, which supports children facing serious illness. 

Dr. Anand Venkatraman holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), a Doctor of Medicine equivalent, from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. While studying there, he earned a number of high-profile awards, scholarships, and fellowship grants including the prestigious Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana Research Fellowship. He went on to graduate in the top 10 percent of his selective class of 50 students.

Working on spinocerebellar ataxia. I handle this project and also manage much of the mouse colony. Procedures I perform include PCR, Immunohistochemistry, Behavioral studies on rodents, and Western Blotting.

Anand Venkatraman - Interests:    

Debating - I won awards at many prestigious debates in school and in medical school. I was one of the winners in the Debate by the Delhi Medical Council on Doctors' payscales in 2008. I also organized and participated in several debates in AIIMS, especially during my tenure as Literary Secretary of the Students' Union. Writing many articles for school and college newsletters, magazines. Also wrote for National Medical Journal of India, one of India's leading medical publications. Also wrote an article for the Students' edition of the British Medical Journal.
