Software specifically built for the purpose of learning is called educational software. With the advent of computers becoming more and more powerful, and easily available, hand-on study materials were slowly replaced by educational software because of their increased effect in the process of learning.

 

Some educational software is simulators also. They simulated partly or wholly various conditions like flight simulation; driving simulation etc. the Americans were the first to train soldiers using analog computers. With the rise of personal computing, many new software companies came up, specially built for training and educational purposes. As new companies came up, pioneering software began to be developed for institutions as well. Slowly large and costly software were being made. This also led to software piracy. To curb this, the companies began to give different academic software discounts to various types of users. Large educations institutions were given academic software discounts when they made bulk purchase of license for software. Even student and home users are given discounts in forms of student contests or maybe direct discounts. These discounts also help in popularizing certain software among a certain grout of people.

 

Today, many educational and training institutions have resorted to open source solutions. These are much cheaper, compared to their previously available alternatives. The software like Britannica encyclopedia, ktouch etc along with CD ROMs, DVDs, and USB devices have revolutionized the world of educational software.
