About Allen Tannenbaum

The Goodrich Professor at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB), Dr. Allen Tannenbaum has made numerous contributions to the areas of computer vision and biomedical imaging. Since earning his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Harvard University in the 1970s, he has completed innumerable research projects and published 450 articles and papers. Dr. Allen Tannenbaum's dedication to scholarship led him to make important strides in the field of robust control and solve the first H-infinity type control problem. This gain margin problem required the use of techniques from the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation theory.

Along with a doctoral student, Dr. Allen Tannenbaum also developed an affine-invariant heat equation to improve biomedical images. His work in computer vision has earned him numerous awards as well as a fellowship with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Furthermore, Dr. Tannenbaum holds four patents in medical imaging and computer vision technology and has overseen the work of several laboratories and research centers, including the MINERVA Lab for Medical Imaging at Georgia Tech and the center for Control and Dynamical Systems at the University of Minnesota. He has also worked as an Associate Editor of several academic journals and a consultant for numerous governmental agencies and private companies.

In addition to his current teaching position at UAB, Dr. Allen Tannenbaum fulfills the role of Interim Chair for the school's Electrical and Computer Engineering department. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Emory Medical School's Department of Radiology and at Georgia Tech's School of Mathematics and College of Computing. An Israeli-American, he held positions with several leading educational institutions in Israel, France, Switzerland, and Canada early in his career. Dr. Allen Tannenbaum continues to lecture internationally and has spoken at companies, conferences, and universities around the globe.
